Pictured: crazy pizza bread with tomato dipping sauce
Original recipe from Full Bellies, Happy Kids.
If you love pizza (and we do) AND love a switch-up, here's a little something fun.
Ingredients:
- 2 t yeast
- 1 1/2 c warm water
- 3 1/3 c wheat flour
- 2 t salt
- 1 t garlic powder
- 3 c toppings (ideas here)
- 2 T Parmesan cheese
- 1 c cheddar or mozzarella cheese
- olive oil to taste
- opt: pizza tomato sauce for dipping
Directions:
- Dump yeast in a bowl, pour water over. Let it bubble. Add flour, salt, and garlic powder, mix until just combined. Knead the 3 c toppings into dough.
- Let rise 1 hour, divide in two. Knead and stretch each half to mostly cover two cookie sheets (will come short). Sprinkle cheese (and more toppings, if desired) in a line down the middle longways, then fold the dough over and seal the edges around the cheese. Basically you're making two long calzones. Breads can be left on individual baking sheets or moved to one. Let rise while oven heats.
- Heat oven to 450. Bake breads 25-30 min, brushing with olive oil and extra Parmesan cheese and/or garlic powder about 3 min before removing.
- Serve warm with pizza tomato sauce. Goes well with fresh pineapple. Freeze leftovers for a second dinner!
