Candy Cane Cookies

Yummy, fun Christmas treat.  They take a lot of attention, so put the kids to work!  Then keep these for yourself.  ;)

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 c butter
  • 1/2 c powder sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 t vanilla
  • 1 t almond extract
  • 1 1/4 c flour
  • 1/2 t salt
  • red food coloring
  • 1/2 c crushed candy canes
Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 375.  Line cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine butter and sugar.  Blend in egg, vanilla, and almond extract.
  3. Add dry ingredients, mix until smooth.
  4. Divide dough in half.  Kneed one half dough with red food coloring.  Dust counter with powder sugar for easy working.
  5. Using about 1 t dough, roll strips of each color.  Twist together and shape into a candy cane. 
  6. Lay on cookie sheet and sprinkle with crushed candy.  Bake 9 minutes.
